Elsie Stephenson Memorial Lecture 2026 | Sowing in Difficult Ground: Growing Clinical Academic Careers in Nursing Join us in marking 70 years of Nursing Studies, established by Elsie Stephenson in 1956.The Elsie Stephenson Memorial Lecture is a biennial event, organised by Nursing Studies, that celebrates Elsie's legacy as the first Director of Europe’s first academic department of nursing. This event acknowledges her significant contribution to the development of the nursing profession in the UK and internationally.Despite significant progress since Elsie Stephenson’s time, challenges remain in enabling clinical practitioners to engage meaningfully with research. In this year's lecture, Professor Lynn Calman reflects on Elsie’s pioneering contributions while exploring the ongoing barriers to developing clinical academic careers in nursing. Drawing on her own extensive experience, Professor Lynn Calman considers how these challenges can be addressed and outlines future directions for strengthening sustainable pathways that integrate clinical practice with academic research.This event will be of interest to nurses, healthcare professionals, researchers, students, and anyone invested in the future of healthcare education and practice.Please note, booking closes on Thursday 14 May 5pm. Speaker Bio Professor Lynn Calman is Professor and Co-Director of the Centre for Psychosocial Research in Cancer at the University of Southampton, and Co-Director of the Southampton Academy of Research at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust.She graduated from the University of Edinburgh with a BSc (Hons) in Nursing in 1993 and was awarded her PhD in 2004, supported by the Gardner Bequest. Established in 1978 by Elsie Stephenson’s husband, William Gardner, the Bequest enables nursing graduates to undertake doctoral research.Professor Calman has held academic posts at the Universities of Glasgow and Manchester before moving to Southampton, where she has worked for the past fourteen years. Her research focuses on integrating academic research into clinical practice, particularly in cancer care, and she has a strong track record in supporting nurses to develop research-active careers.
