UoE Saving Lives nominated for RCN Scotland Nurse of the Year Awards

Congratulations to the University of Edinburgh Saving Lives project team, led by our own Nursing Students, who have been nominated for the RCN Nursing Student of the Year Award.

The UoE Saving Lives project, led by our Nursing Studies students; Irma Rodriguez, Anabel Fernandez, Lorena Alvarez De Eulate Mullany, Megan Caldwell and Merwa Zen, has trained over 200 university students and staff in CPR since May 2023. As recognition for these efforts, they have all been nominated for the RCN Nursing Student of the Year Award, which aims to recognise those who have shown exceptional promise during their professional education and/or practice placement.

The UoE Saving Lives project was set up by our final-year students alongside medical student Hannah Kaufmann Wolfe and aims to teach cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), an emergency lifesaving procedure performed when the heart stops beating, to students and staff across the University of Edinburgh community. The initiative, funded through the Student Experience Grant, is supported by our Nursing Studies department and Save a Life Scotland, and includes CPR and AED training as well as multidisciplinary collaboration.

We could not be more proud of this group of students, who have worked exceptionally hard while juggling placement and assignments to build this project. The Saving Lives project has allowed this inspiring group to demonstrate much of what contributes to excellence in nursing practice. They have demonstrated superb skills of leadership, education and interprofessional team working and we look forward to them embarking on exciting and fulfilling careers in the nursing profession.
