The part-time model means students can undertake the programme over 2-4 years and will only be charged tuition fees as and when they enrol for individual courses. Please note, however, that the online learning programme offers a distinct range of courses in comparison to the campus-based programme of the same name. Teaching approaches are innovative and the teaching team includes expertise in a range of research areas and professional practice. The teaching team includes clinical, health and developmental psychologists with expertise in various fields of enquiry including early psychosis, trauma and resilience, developmental psychopathology, and therapeutic approaches including CBT, IPT and third-wave CBT. The core elements of the programme include both conceptual and applied courses. At the conceptual level, the programme will review different theories of children and young people’s mental health involved in the complex structure of typical and atypical development. At the applied level it will include the application of psychological knowledge to difficulties experienced by children and young people and the critical appraisal of psychological knowledge and practice. Why study this programme? The MSc Mental Health in Children and Young People: Psychological Approaches (Online) offers a unique perspective: that children and young people’s mental health and wellbeing is influenced by developmental processes at multiple levels, from individual to socio-cultural and that approaches to working with mental health and well-being need to be informed by this dynamic and interactional system. By drawing on the knowledge and clinical experience of a world-class department of clinical and health psychology, the programme aims to equip students with the knowledge necessary for understanding children and young people’s mental health and well-being from this unique perspective. The programme will also draw upon many other theoretical areas, including early intervention, health promotion, public health, health and social inequalities, critical psychology, developmental psychopathology and resilience. Can I practise professionally as a clinical psychologist after completing this programme? The MSc Mental Health in Children and Young People: Psychological Approaches (Online) will not qualify you to work as a practitioner or therapist in the UK. In order to do so, you must have undertaken BPS-accredited training. Neither does the programme confer Graduate Basis for Chartership (GBC) with the British Psychological Society (BPS). If you are interested in obtaining a professional qualification to practise as a clinical psychologist, please see our Doctorate in Clinical Psychology: Doctorate in Clinical Psychology Beyond the programme The knowledge and understanding of children and young people's mental health, wellbeing and psychological practice is of value to a wide range of professions working with children. The degree also demonstrates a student's high level of commitment to working with children and young people and can lead to careers in clinical practice, social work, social care, nursing, teaching and working for volunteer organisations.
