Dr Leah Macaden with her award certificate
I believe in research mentoring of our PGR students alongside high quality supervision and support offering additional opportunities where possible for the students I supervise to help them prepare for the world of academia. I have been a finalist or winner in the Supervisor of the Year category in two Scottish universities that I worked before I moved to Edinburgh in 2022. I had reached the shortlist for this category at Edinburgh last year and it was a proud moment to win the award this year at Edinburgh, the number one University for Nursing Studies in the UK. With this being a student – led award, it is a very special affirmation of my work from the students themselves. It is wonderful that EUSA share the content of the nominations received which also reflects how much the students appreciate what we do. The award ceremony was of exceptional quality highlighting gratitude, talent, potential and promise for the future from our students. It was a special privilege to be there and share the evening with family, students and colleagues.

The Students’ Association Teaching Awards is an annual celebration where students nominate staff who have made a significant difference to their learning experience. The awards honour the very best in teaching, supervision, and student support across the University.

Leah’s supervision was described as the very best example of what a good supervisor-student relationship should be – built on mutual respect, encouragement, and care.

Her students praised her for going above and beyond: meticulously reviewing their work, suggesting valuable development opportunities, and always offering speedy, detailed, and thoughtful advice.

One supervisee shared that Leah “truly cares about students as people,” and it’s clear to all of us that the support, guidance, and friendship she provides are truly exceptional.

The School of Health in Social Science extends its heartfelt congratulations to Leah and to all the incredible winners of the 2025 awards!
