The eroticising of HIV: viral fantasies

How can HIV become the source of arousal? What are the consequences of this? What is the boundary between fantasy and reality? Is there such a boundary? In this seminar, Jaime Garcia-Iglesias will talk about his research on bugchasers, a subculture of gay men who eroticise HIV. Relying on interviews with over 25 bugchasers, he will explain bugchasing and explore how this practice complicates the boundaries of traditional understandings of fantasy and reality—requiring new theorisations. In particular, Jaime will mobilise queer theory to reflect on the ways in which the internet and PrEP (a novel form of HIV prophylaxis) transform our sexual fantasies and health behaviours.
