Who's in control? Rewriting narratives of violence through creative film practice Violence has the uneasy power of pervading over everything it touches. When a traumatic event becomes the catalyst for change in someone’s life, who is the one writing the narrative? On both conscious and unconscious levels, it can be possible to witness a process of authorship through the creative process, working intentionally with therapeutic means as well as through pure creative expression. Reflecting on the scientific, therapeutic as well as the creative processes involved with the healing from trauma, this seminar will explore the nuances of memory reclamation and ownership. What does it mean to make non-violent work? Is it possible to recognise a narrative of violence when it is taking place? How can survivors reclaim authorship? Filmwork made between 2004 - 2021, exploring these processes viscerally, will be presented as well as reflective writing. Julian Triandafyllou is a filmmaker working in creative documentary. He graduated in Fine Arts from Central Saint Martins, London (2008), before completing his MA in film direction from the University of Edinburgh (2019). He is currently an associate artist with Traumascapes. Dec 07 2023 16.30 - 17.45 Who's in control?
