Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is one of the most common neurodevelopmental conditions in Scotland and the UK. It’s estimated to affect 3-5% of Scotland’s population but 99% of those affected remain unrecognised. This September, FASD Awareness Month highlights the importance of prevention, awareness, and professional training. The University of Edinburgh has become a world leader in FASD education. In 2023, we launched the first Postgraduate Certificate in FASD in Europe. This comprises three courses which can be taken individually as CPD or for academic credit, enabling a learning journey about the condition, the assessment and diagnosis of FASD, and advanced practice. Around one child in every classroom may be living with the condition, which has more than three times the prevalence of autism. Many professionals in health, education, and social care are still unaware of how common it is or how to provide appropriate support. While most people know alcohol is harmful in pregnancy, many are surprised to learn it causes greater risks to development than other illicit drugs, such as heroin or cocaine. Binge drinking, which is consuming six units or more, is particularly risky. That’s why initiatives like FASD Awareness Month and FASD Awareness Day are so important. Held on 9 September – the 9th day of the 9th month, symbolising a healthy nine months of pregnancy – they share one clear message: “No alcohol, no risk.” If you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or could become pregnant, the safest choice is to avoid alcohol altogether. The University’s training is designed to equip professionals with the tools and confidence to identify, understand, and respond to FASD. By embedding this knowledge across sectors, we can ensure better support for individuals and families affected by the condition. Anyone working in mental health, neurodevelopment, disabilities or health, social care or education sectors should have awareness of this common condition. For more information on our courses, and how they may assist you in your role, check out the following webpages: PgCert Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) (Online) Understanding Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) CPD Advanced Practice in Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) CPD The Assessment and Diagnoses of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) CPD Related LinksFetal Alcohol Advisory Support & Training Team (FAASTT)FAASTT Training Competency Framework Tags 2025 Publication date 09 Sep, 2025
